Grape Varietals

Aglianico is a black grape grown in the southern regions of Italy, predominantly in Basilicata and Campania. It is considered along with Sangiovese and Nebbiolo to be one of the three greatest Italian varieties.

Albariño is a white grape grown in Galicia in north-western Spain, and in northern Portugal where the grape is known as Alvarinho. Some of the oldest living vines in the world are Albariño vines and are up to 300 years old.

Alicante Bouschet is a rare grape known as a teinturier, meaning it has red coloured flesh as well as skin. The deep colours it produces means it has historically been popular for blending with lighter red wines, however it also produces highly prized varietal wines as well.

Aligoté is a white grape that produces dry white wines and is the third-most popular variety grown in the Burgundy region of France, after Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Along with blackcurrant liqueur, Aligoté wine is the traditionally the key ingredient of the Kir cocktail.

Ansonica, also referred to as Inzolia, is a white grape variety that is indigenous to Italy. It is mostly grown in Sicily - where it is often used to produce Marsala wine - as well as Tuscany and to a lesser extent, Calabria.

Antão Vaz is a white wine grape native to Portugal and one of the most prized varieties of the Alentejo region. Historically almost exclusively grown in Vidigueira, it can nowadays also be found in small cultivations around Lisbon and in the Península de Setúbal.

Areni is a thick-skinned red grape variety of ancient origin that is cultivated in the Transcaucasus where it makes full-bodied red wines, notably in Armenia and Turkey.

Arinto is a versatile grape that is commonly grown in most of Portugal’s wine regions. In Vinho Verde it goes by the alternative name of Pedernã.

Arneis is an Italian white grape variety that is most commonly associated with the Piedmont region. The historical role of the grape has been as a softening for Nebbiolo, however Arneis today is more commonly found in varietal wines. 

Assyrtiko is a white grape indigenous to Greece, specifically to the the island of Santorini in the southern Aegean sea.

Sagrantino is a red wine grape variety that is grown primarily in the Umbria region of Italy, where it is used to produce highly tannic and deeply coloured wines.

Sangiovese is a red grape variety native to Italy and is the most widely-planted in the country. The grape is key to a number of blends but is particularly known for those made in Tuscany.

Schiava, also known as Trollinger in Germany, is a red wine grape variety that is mostly grown in the northern regions of Italy. The grape is believed to be of Slavic origin and has a wide range of synonyms that also include Grauvernatsch, Kleinvernatsch and Grossvernatsch.

Schioppettino is a red wine grape variety that is grown in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in north-eastern Italy.

Sémillon is a white wine grape variety that is widely grown in the Bordeaux region of France and other wine-producing regions such as Australia and California.

Seyval Blanc is a hybrid grape variety that is used to make white wine. It is a cross between Seibel 5279 and Seyve-Villard 15-189 and was developed in France in the early 20th century as a way to resist disease and cold temperatures.

Shesh i Bardhë is a red grape variety that is grown in Albania. It is a traditional grape in the country and is known for producing red wines with high tannin levels and moderate acidity.

An ancestor of Cabernet, Shesh i Zi is an autochthonic grape varietal grown in Albania, taking its name for the local term for "black field." The name is derived from the Shesh Hills where it is grown just outside of Tirana. 

St. Laurent is a red wine grape variety that is a crossing of Pinot Noir and an obscure grape variety known as Schiava Grossa. It is primarily grown in Austria and the Czech Republic where it is known for producing full-bodied and aromatic red wines.

Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is a red wine grape variety that originated in the Rhône region of France. It is now widely planted in many countries around the world and is especially known for producing full-bodied, tannic and sometimes spicy red wines.

Verdelho is a white wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Madeira wine region of Portugal and is also widely planted in Australia. It is known for producing crisp, medium-bodied white wines with good acidity, and is often used in the production of fortified wines and blends.

Verdicchio is a white wine grape variety that is indigenous to the Marche region of central Italy. It is known for producing crisp, fresh and citrusy white wines with good acidity, and is considered one of the signature wine grapes of the region.

Vermentino is a white wine grape variety that is primarily grown in Italy, particularly in the island regions of Sardinia and Corsica, and in the coastal regions of Liguria and Tuscany.

Vidal is a hybrid wine grape variety that was developed in France and is now widely grown in the United States, particularly in the colder wine regions of the East Coast and the Great Lakes region.

Viognier is a white wine grape variety that is indigenous to the Rhône wine region of France, where it is primarily grown in the Northern Rhône.

Voskehat is a white wine grape variety that is indigenous to Armenia and is one of the country's oldest wine grape varieties.
