Ansonica, also referred to as Inzolia, is a white grape variety that is indigenous to Italy. It is mostly grown in Sicily - where it is often used to produce Marsala wine - as well as Tuscany and to a lesser extent, Calabria.
Almost all Ansonica cultivation is in Italy, accounting for close to 100%. In Sicily it is mostly concentrated in Palermo and Agrigento, while in Tuscany it is commonly found in Maremma and on the island of Giglio.
A very small amount of the grape is also grown in Australia.
Differing climate and terroir mean that there are some interesting differences between the Sicilian Inzolia and the Tuscan Ansonica. The former has a sharp and saline quality from the nearby sea, tending to be more acidic than its Tuscan counterpart which is rounder and more delicate.
On the nose Ansonica has characteristic notes of balsamic, white pepper and honey, with citrus, stone fruits such as apricot and peach, as well as green apple. On the palate it tends to offer grassy and herbal flavours with notes of lime and certain mineral qualities.
