Schiava, also known as Trollinger in Germany, is a red wine grape variety that is mostly grown in the northern regions of Italy. The grape is believed to be of Slavic origin and has a wide range of synonyms that also include Grauvernatsch, Kleinvernatsch and Grossvernatsch.

Notable regions

Schiava is primarily found in the northern Italian regions of Trentino and Alto Adige. Its most notable use is as the key grape of the Santa Maddalena DOC of the latter.

The grape is also found in Germany where it is most commonly referred to as Trollinger, mostly grown there Württemberg wine region. There the variety is often blended there with other grape varieties such as Lemberger or used as a component in sparkling wines.

Characteristics

Shiava is known to be light and intensely sweet and fruity, often exhibiting notes of cotton candy, bubblegum and strawberry. As such producers often make Schiava wines in drier styles so as not to overwhelm the palate. Other notes can include raspberry, herbs and spices.

Schiava wine is low in tannin, low in alcohol and high in refreshing acidity.
