Schioppettino is a red wine grape variety that is grown in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in north-eastern Italy. It is a relatively rare grape that is known for its robust, full-bodied and tannic wine that is often characterized by spicy, earthy and berry flavours, making it a unique and sought after wine.
Schioppettino is grown primarily in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of north-eastern Italy where it is a significant part of the cultural and economic heritage. The Rosazzo DOC is the most well-regarded sub-region for Schioppettino wine production where the grape has a long history of cultivation. It is also grown in smaller quantities in the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC. Schioppettino is considered a traditional and historic grape of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and is one of the few varieties to have originated in the region.
Although almost all Schioppettino is under vine in Italy, there are small plantings in the United States and Australia too.
Schioppettino tends to produce full-bodied and tannic wines with a rich and complex flavour profile. The variety typically has aromas of dark fruit, such as black cherries and blackberries, as well as spices and earthy notes.
Schioppettino wines are often described as having a bold and intense character, with high acidity and firm tannins that contribute to a long and persistent finish. They can range from dry to slightly off-dry in sweetness and have moderate to high alcohol levels.
