Sagrantino is a red wine grape variety that is grown primarily in the Umbria region of Italy, where it is used to produce highly tannic and deeply coloured wines. It is a relatively rare variety that is prized for its unique flavour profile, which includes notes of dark fruit, spices, and a distinct bitterness, and is considered one of Italy's most interesting and complex red wine grapes.
Sagrantino is most famously grown in the Umbria region of central Italy. Despite its challenging nature, Sagrantino has become a symbol of Umbrian winemaking, with a number of high-quality wines being produced in the region. The variety is grown mainly in the in the hills surrounding the town of Montefalco, where they are represented in the varietal wines of the Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG.
Outside of Italy, there are small amounts of Sagrantino under vine in countries such as Australia, California and Argentina.
Sagrantino wines tend to be full-bodied with high levels of tannins that provide structure. It is known for its rich and complex aromas, which often include notes of black fruit, spice, and leather.
On the palate, Sagrantino is typically characterised by bold flavours of dark fruit, such as blackberry and black cherry, which are balanced by firm tannins and bright acidity. The wine has a reputation for being robust, with a long finish that lingers on the palate. When properly aged, Sagrantino can develop secondary flavours of tobacco, earth, and leather, which contribute to its overall complexity.
