Seyval Blanc

Seyval Blanc is a hybrid grape variety that is used to make white wine. It is a cross between Seibel 5279 and Seyve-Villard 15-189 and was developed in France in the early 20th century as a way to resist disease and cold temperatures.

Notable regions

Seyval Blanc is widely grown in the cool climate wine regions of the north-eastern United States, including New York and the New England area. It is considered one of the most important and widely planted hybrid grape varieties in the region where it is well-suited to the challenging growing conditions, with a strong resistance to disease and good winter hardiness. The grape is widely used to produce a range of wine styles, from dry and crisp to sweet and fruity, and is also used in sparkling wine production.

While the majority of Seyval Blanc under vine is found in the United States, it is also cultivated in small plantings in England, Poland and Switzerland.

Characteristics

Seyval Blanc tends to produce crisp and refreshing wines with a distinctive flavour profile. The variety typically has aromas of green apple, citrus, and sometimes a hint of floral notes. Seyval Blanc wines are often described as having bright acidity and a light-bodied character. They can range from dry to slightly sweet in style and have moderate alcohol levels.

The flavour profile of Seyval Blanc wines can vary depending on growing conditions, but they are generally known for their fresh and fruity character.
