Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is a red wine grape variety that originated in the Rhône region of France. It is now widely planted in many countries around the world and is especially known for producing full-bodied, tannic and sometimes spicy red wines.
Syrah is widely grown in several wine regions around the world under various different names. Some of the most famous of these are from the Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Joseph appellations of the northern Rhône in France. Known as Shiraz in Australia, it is one of the most widely planted red grape varieties there and is grown in the warm and sunny wine regions of South Australia and Victoria.
The grape is also widely grown in the United States, particularly in California, Washington and Oregon, and in other countries such such as Italy, South Africa and Chile.
The variety typically has aromas of dark fruit, such as blackberry, black cherry, and plum, along with hints of spice, such as black pepper, and sometimes a touch of smokiness or meatiness.
Syrah wines are often full-bodied, with firm tannins and good acidity. They can range from medium to full-bodied in style, with moderate to high alcohol levels, and are often described as having a bold and flavourful character.
