Viognier is a white wine grape variety that is indigenous to the Rhône wine region of France, where it is primarily grown in the Northern Rhône. It is known for producing aromatic and medium-bodied white wines with flavours of peaches, apricots and a hint of spice, and is considered a signature grape of the region.
The Viognier grape is widely associated with the Rhône Valley in France where it is used to produce some of the region's most iconic white wines. The best-known of these is the Condrieu appellation of the northern Rhône. It is also one of the six key varieties approved in the blend of the white Côtes du Rhône blanc appellation.
Viognier is also grown in California, where it is gaining popularity, as well as in other wine regions in the United States, such as Washington and Virginia. The grape is also under vine in Australia, South Africa, and Italy.
Viognier wines are known for their rich and complex aroma profile, with notes of apricot, peach, and tropical fruits. The wine is also characterised by its distinctive floral notes, with hints of jasmine, orange blossom, and honeysuckle.
On the palate, Viognier wines are full-bodied, with a creamy texture and flavours of ripe stone fruits, citrus, and spice. The wine is known for its good balance between sweetness and acidity, with a long, lingering finish.
