Arneis is an Italian white grape variety that is most commonly associated with the Piedmont region. The historical role of the grape has been as a softening for Nebbiolo, however Arneis today is more commonly found in varietal wines.
The grape is most commonly grown in the Roero area and is a key component in the production of Roero Arneis wine. It is also cultivated in the Langhe region of Piedmont and is sometimes blended with other grape varieties to produce unique wine styles.
In recent years, the grape has gained popularity in Australia and the United States, where it is grown in the cooler regions such as the Anderson Valley of California.
Arneis wines are often made in a bone-dry style with medium to light body and usually low acidity.
The grape is known for its crisp, fresh flavour profile with notes of orchard fruits like green apples and pears, stone fruits such as peach, as well as honey, almonds, nutmeg and citrus.
