Verdelho is a white wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Madeira wine region of Portugal and is also widely planted in Australia. It is known for producing crisp, medium-bodied white wines with good acidity, and is often used in the production of fortified wines and blends.
Verdelho is notably grown in several wine regions around the world, and is particularly synonymous with Portugal's Madeira where it is considered one of the island's iconic varieties. Despite finding fame for its use in fortified wine, the grape is cultivated across Portugal and is also used to produce dry and sweet white wines in Australia's Hunter Valley and Margaret River regions.
Elsewhere, small plantings of Verdelho can be found in the South African wine region of Stellenbosch, as well as in Spain, the United States and New Zealand.
Verdelho grapes are known for producing medium-bodied, crisp and fresh white wines with bright acidity and a touch of minerality. Aromas and flavours of Verdelho wines vary depending on the region, but often include citrus, stone fruit, and honey notes.
The grape is known for its versatility, and is often used to produce light, refreshing table wines, as well as more complex, barrel-aged wines.
