Arinto is a versatile grape that is commonly grown in most of Portugal’s wine regions. In Vinho Verde it goes by the alternative name of Pedernã.

Other synonyms for the grape include Arinto Cachudo, Arinto Miudo and Arinto Galego, with the first known mention of the grape by the name Arinto made in 1712 in by Portuguese wine writer, Vincincio Alarte.

Arinto is a late-ripening, medium-sized grape that grows in tightly packed bunches. The vines have large leaves to provide ample shading to the grapes and grow best in chalky soils, adding a mineral quality to its high acidity wines. It tends to produce highly regarded white wines that are often well-suited to ageing.

Due to its high acidity, Arinto is often used in blends, particularly in hot and dry regions such as Alentejo, and it is also an ideal candidate for producing sparkling wines.

Notable regions

Arinto is almost exclusively grown in Portugal, most notably in the DOC regions of Bucelas, Tejo and Vinho Verde. A very small amount is cultivated in Australia.

Characteristics

Arinto produces very dry wines with medium to light body and exceptional acidity that ageing can evolve for up to 10 years.

The dominant flavours and aromas are lemon, apple, beeswax, hazelnut, chalky minerality, and occasional tropical notes.
