Sangiovese is a red grape variety native to Italy and is the most widely-planted in the country. The grape is key to a number of blends but is particularly known for those made in Tuscany.
Sangiovese is widely and predominantly grown in Italy, particularly in the regions of Tuscany, Umbria and Romagna. In Tuscany, it is the main grape variety used in the production of Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino wines. In Umbria, it is used in the production of Rosso di Montefalco and Torgiano wines. Sangiovese is also a key component in the production of several Super Tuscans.
The grape is also cultivated in other countries such as the United States, Argentina, Australia and South Africa.
Wines produced using Sangiovese are known for their high acidity and tannins, which give firm structure and the ability to age well.
Sangiovese is known for its red fruit flavours such as cherry and raspberry, as well as earthy, spicy, and sometimes herbal notes. The wine's aroma is often described as floral and fruity with hints of spice and earth.
