Giacomo Conterno is an Italian wine producer located in Piedmont, Italy. Established in 1908, they specialize in producing premium Barolo wines using traditional winemaking methods and ageing them for extended periods in large oak casks.
Giacomo Conterno, based in Monforte d'Alba in Italy's Piedmont region is a renowned Barolo producer with a history dating back to 1908. The estate was founded by Giovanni Conterno who began bottling Barolo at a time when it was typically sold in cask or demijohn, aiming to create wines with significant aging potential. In 1920 his son Giacomo introduced the Barolo Riserva Monfortino - named after their hometown - which became a benchmark for traditional Barolo.
In 1961, Giacomo's sons Giovanni and Aldo took over the estate. While Giovanni upheld the traditional winemaking methods, Aldo eventually departed in 1969 to establish his own winery, Poderi Aldo Conterno, embracing a more modern approach. A significant development occurred in 1974 when Giovanni acquired the Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, allowing the estate to produce wines exclusively from its own grapes.
Roberto Conterno, Giovanni's son, joined the winery in 1988 and assumed full control after Giovanni's passing in 2004. Roberto has maintained the estate's traditional practices, including extended maceration and aging in large Slavonian oak casks. Under his leadership the estate expanded its vineyard holdings with the acquisition of the Cerretta vineyard in 2008 and the Arione vineyard in 2015, further solidifying its commitment to producing Barolo that reflects the unique terroir of Serralunga d'Alba.
