Tuscany is a wine-producing region located in central Italy and is known for its production of some of Italy's most famous and iconic wines, including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The region is characterised by its rolling hills, warm climate, and diverse soil types, providing ideal growing conditions for a range of grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, among others.
Tuscany's winemaking history dates back to ancient times, with early practices influenced by the Etruscans and later the Romans. The region's varied climate and soils provided a favourable environment for cultivating local grape varieties, setting the stage for a long tradition of viticulture. Throughout the medieval period, monastic communities and local families further refined winemaking techniques, establishing foundational practices that would evolve over the centuries.
By the Renaissance, Tuscany had become well known for its Sangiovese-based wines, with sub-regions such as Chianti and Montepulciano gaining prominence. The introduction of regulated appellations, including DOC and DOCG systems, helped formalise quality standards and preserve regional identities. Esteemed estates like Marchesi Antinori played a significant role in both preserving tradition and driving innovation within these historic wine areas.
In the 20th century, the emergence of the Super Tuscan category brought a new chapter to the region by blending traditional grape varieties with international ones. Producers such as Tenuta San Guido and Ornellaia contributed to redefining Tuscan wine by challenging established conventions while maintaining a connection to the region’s heritage. Today, Tuscany continues to balance its rich historical legacy with modern winemaking practices, resulting in a diverse portfolio that remains central to Italy’s wine culture.
