Barolo is a prestigious red wine produced around the village of Barolo in the northern Italian region of Piemonte (Piedmont). Made exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape, it is widely regarded as one of Italy’s finest wines and is famously nicknamed the “King of Wines and the Wine of Kings” because it was favored by the House of Savoy, Italy’s royal family.

In July 1980, when Italy introduced its highest wine classification, DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), Barolo was among the very first wines to receive this designation, reflecting its historic importance and strict production standards. The Barolo DOCG zone encompasses 11 communes in the heart of the Langhe area of Piemonte. Most estates are small, family-owned wineries, so production is relatively limited, contributing to the wine’s exclusivity and global reputation.
