Dolcetto is a red wine grape variety that is primarily grown in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. It is used to produce a medium-bodied, dry red wine with a relatively short aging potential and a relatively simple flavor profile.

 

Notable regions

Dolcetto is primarily cultivated in the Piedmont region of Italy. Most notably the Alba, Dogliani, and Ovada sub-regions are known for producing high-quality Dolcetto wines with DOCG status, while DOC wines are also produced in Acqui and Asti.

Piedmont accounts for around 98% of Dolcetto under vine in Italy, with only a small amount grown elsewhere. Other countries where the grape is grown include Australia and the United States.

Characteristics

The Dolcetto grape has a relatively thin skin which contributes to their soft tannins and approachable flavour profile. Its wines are known to by dry, medium to full-bodied with medium to low acidity.

The wines produced from Dolcetto grapes are known for their dark fruit flavours, including black cherry, plum, and blackberry, as well as notes of spices, herbs, and chocolate.
