Nebbiolo is a red wine grape variety that is mostly grown in the Piedmont region of Italy. It is best known for producing the highly prized red wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, which are known for their elegance, complexity and long aging potential.
Nebbiolo is most famously used in the production of Barolo and Barbaresco wines in Piedmont, which are considered among the finest red wines of Italy. In addition to Piedmont, Nebbiolo is also grown in other regions of Italy such as Lombardy and Valle d'Aosta.
Although almost all Nebbiolo under vine is found in Italy, the grape has representation across the world with small plantings in the United States, Argentina, and Australia.
Nebbiolo grapes produce rich, full-bodied red wines with a distinctive aroma profile. On the nose, Nebbiolo wines are known for their floral and spicy notes, with scents of rose petals, tar, and liquorice.
The flavour profile of Nebbiolo wines is similarly complex, with tastes of dark fruits such as cherries and blackberries, along with earthy, mushroom-like undertones. The tannins in Nebbiolo wines are usually robust, providing structure and a firm grip on the palate. Nebbiolo wines are often aged for several years in oak barrels to soften the tannins and enhance the wine's flavours and aromas.
