The Rhône is a wine-growing region located in south-eastern France, along the river of the same name. The region is known for its full-bodied red wines made from the Syrah grape and its crisp white wines made from the Viognier grape, as well as its blends which are made from a combination of red and white grape varieties.
The Rhône wine region has a long and varied history, with its viticultural practices dating back to ancient times. Influences from Greek settlers and later the Romans helped establish the early cultivation of vineyards along the Rhône River. Over the centuries, both medieval and modern innovations further refined winemaking techniques, laying the foundation for the region's enduring reputation in wine production.
The region is broadly divided into the Northern and Southern Rhône, each with its own distinctive characteristics. In the Northern Rhône, steep vineyards produce primarily Syrah-based wines in sub-regions such as Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Cornas, where producers like E. Guigal and Domaine Jamet have become well recognised for their dedication to terroir-driven wines. The Southern Rhône is known for its blended wines, often centreed around Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, with notable appellations including Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, and Vacqueyras; estates such as Château de Beaucastel and Domaine du Pegau have played key roles in shaping its reputation.
Today, the Rhône region continues to balance its rich historical legacy with modern techniques and sustainable practices. Winemakers in both the north and south maintain a strong focus on expressing the unique characteristics of their vineyards while adapting to contemporary challenges. This commitment to quality and tradition ensures that the Rhône remains a significant and evolving contributor to the global wine landscape.
