Marsanne is a white wine grape variety that is widely grown in the Northern Rhône region of France. It is often blended with Roussanne to create a full-bodied and complex wine.

Notable regions

The Marsanne grape is mostly cultivated in France where it is popular in the Northern Rhône region. It is often blended there with the white grape variety Roussanne to produce full-bodied white wines such as those from Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. Marsanne is also key to white Côtes du Rhône wines.

The grape is grown in other wine regions too where it is mostly found in varietal wines. Of note these include the Central Valley in California and the Yarra Valley in Australia.

Characteristics

Marsanne tends to produce full-bodied white wines with a rich and complex flavour profile. On the nose, these wines have an aroma profile featuring notes of ripe stone fruit such as peaches and apricots, as well as hints of honey, nuts, and floral notes.

On the palate, Marsanne wines are characterized by their creamy texture and a balanced acidity, leading to a long and smooth finish. These wines are also known to exhibit flavours such as nuts, honey, and spice.
