Grenache is a red wine grape variety that is widely grown in the Southern Rhône region of France and is one of the most widely cultivated grape varieties in the world with plantings in Spain, Italy, California, and Australia. It is used to produce a variety of red wine styles, ranging from light and fruity to rich and robust, and is often blended with other grape varieties to produce full-bodied, richly flavoured red wines.
Although grown across the world, the Grenache grape is predominantly cultivated in France and Spain. Of particular not are the Southern Rhône in France where it is a key component in the production of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and other Rhône blends, and the Catalan region in Spain where it is known as Garnacha and is used in the production of the red wines of Priorat and other regions in Catalonia.
Other notable Grenache-growing regions are Sardinia in Italy, the McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley regions in Australia, and the Central Coast and Paso Robles regions of California in the United States, where it is used in the production of Rhône-style blends and varietal wines.
Grenache is known for producing light to medium-bodied wines with medium to high alcohol levels and a medium tannin content.
When produced as varietal wine, Grenache exhibits rich, spicy, berry flavours, particularly raspberry, strawberry and black cherry. Other notes can include anise, tobacco and cinnamon.
