Mourvèdre is a red wine grape variety that is widely grown in the Southern Rhône region of France. It is known for producing full-bodied and robust wines with strong tannins and is often blended with other grape varieties to create complex and deeply flavoured wines.

Notable regions

The Mourvèdre grape is a key variety in the wines produced in Provence and the Southern Rhône region of France, where it is regular component in Côtes du Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends. The majority of the grape's cultivation actually takes place in Spain however, where it is popular in the Navarra region.

Mourvèdre is also grown in other wine regions such as the Bandol region of France as well as in Australia and California where it is known as Mataro.

Characteristics

Mourvèdre tends to produce robust and full-bodied red wines with a rich flavour profile. On the nose these wines have an aroma profile that features notes of dark fruit such as blackberries and plums, as well as hints of spices and leather.

On the palate, Mourvèdre wines are characterised by their full body and a balanced acidity, leading to a long and persistent finish. These can exhibit a range of flavours that can include dark fruit such as blueberry, blackberry and plum, spices, occasional smoke and a hint of earthiness.
