Brunello di Montalcino comes from the Tuscan town of Montalcino. The wine must be made from 100% Sangiovese and aged in oak - commonly Slavonian oak - for a minimum of 2 years, though traditionally winemakers would age their Brunellos in oak for at least 3 years prior to release.
The San Giuseppe Winery takes its name from the sharecropping estate established by Giuseppe Martelli in 1910. Abandoned in 1940, it was acquired by Stella Viola di Campalto in 1992. The estate was originally planted in 1992, and has been certified organic since 1996 and biodynamic since 2002.
Sangiovese is a red grape variety native to Italy and is the most widely-planted in the country. The grape is key to a number of blends but is particularly known for those made in Tuscany.
