History

Stella di Campalto traces its roots to Podere San Giuseppe, established in 1910 in the south‑east corner of Brunello di Montalcino. The estate was abandoned during the second world war and remained dormant until 1992 when Stella Viola di Campalto and her family acquired the dilapidated property near Castelnuovo dell’Abate.

Beginning in 1996, Stella implemented certified organic viticulture and adopted biodynamic practices by 2002, earning certification in 2005. She tends around 6.5 ha of vineyards split across several plots, each with unique soil and exposure, and harvests all by hand. Vinification is traditional, including separate spontaneous fermentations in large wooden vats, gentle gravity handling, and ageing in large casks and barriques followed by extended bottle ageing.

Today, Stella di Campalto is recognised for crafting pure, site‑expressive Sangiovese wines (Rosso and Brunello) with meticulous attention to terroir and vintage character. Her small production (typically 20–35,000 bottles/year) and delayed release schedule reflect a philosophy centred on letting the wines find their own voice.
