Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety that is widely grown in the Abruzzo region of Italy. It is best known for producing the hearty red wine called Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, which is known for its rich, dark fruit flavours and firm tannins.
The majority of Montepulciano cultivation takes places in Italy where it is famed for its wine production under the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC. The most famous Montepulciano wines from Abruzzo are made to its north in the DOCG region of the Colline Teramane foothills.
Montepulciano is also grown in the Italian regions of Marche, as well as in small cultivations in New Zealand and Australia.
Montepulciano tends to produce robust and full-bodied red wines with a rich flavour profile. On the nose, these wines have an aroma profile that features notes of dark fruit such as black cherries and plums, as well as hints of spices and leather.
On the palate, Montepulciano wines are characterised by their full body and a balanced acidity, leading to a long and persistent finish. These wines are can exhibit a range of flavours that can include dark fruit, spices and a hint of earthiness.
