Since the 1955 Saint-Émilion classification, Château Cheval Blanc has held the highest rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé "A". In 2021 the Château voluntary withdrew from the official Saint-Émilion classification system due to concerns about the evolving criteria.
Château Cheval Blanc is made from a fairly even blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc occasionally with a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon: aged for 16-18 months in new French oak.
Château Cheval Blanc, is widely considered by many experts, to be the leading estate in Saint-Émilion. It is located in the north-west of the Saint-Émilion appellation, bordering Pomerol in the Bordeaux region of France. Cheval Blanc produces the most famous Cabernet Franc-based wine in the world.
France is widely recognized as one of the world's premier wine-producing countries, renowned for its diverse range of wine styles and regions, including Champagne, Bordeaux, and Burgundy.
Premier Grand Cru Classé is a prestigious designation awarded to a select group of Bordeaux wine estates that consistently produce wines of exceptional quality and distinction. In the 1855 Classification, created for the Exposition Universelle de Paris, only five estates from the Médoc and one from Graves (now part of Pessac-Léognan) were ranked as Premier Cru Classé, including iconic names like Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château Haut-Brion, and Château Mouton Rothschild (which was elevated to this status in 1973). In Saint-Émilion, a separate and regularly updated classification system recognizes a few top estates as Premier Grand Cru Classé A and B, with only a handful achieving the highest tier. This title reflects not only a wine's historical significance but also its ongoing excellence in vineyard management, terroir expression, and winemaking. Wines from Premier Grand Cru Classé estates are highly sought after for their complexity, longevity, and prestige.
