Pessac-Léognan

Pessac-Léognan is an esteemed wine appellation located in the southern part of Bordeaux’s Graves region, just to the south of the city of Bordeaux itself. Known for producing both exceptional red and white wines, Pessac-Léognan is home to some of Bordeaux’s most celebrated estates, including Château Haut-Brion, one of the five First Growths from the 1855 classification. The terroir of Pessac-Léognan is characterized by a combination of gravelly soils, which offer excellent drainage, and a temperate climate influenced by the nearby Garonne River. This results in wines of great elegance, with red wines typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, producing structured, complex wines with dark fruit flavors, tobacco, and earthy notes. White wines, made primarily from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, are known for their freshness, citrusy aromatics, and a subtle hint of oak. The region is particularly prized for its balance of power and finesse, making Pessac-Léognan wines some of the most sought-after in Bordeaux.
