Pinot Noir is a red wine grape variety that is grown in many wine regions around the world, including Burgundy, France and the Willamette Valley in Oregon. It is known for producing elegant, light- to medium-bodied wines with delicate fruit flavours, subtle tannins and a soft, smooth texture, and is considered one of the most versatile red wine grape varieties.

Notable regions

Some of the most notable Pinot Noir producing regions include Burgundy in France, Sonoma and Napa Valleys in California, Oregon and New Zealand. In Burgundy, Pinot Noir is the dominant grape variety and is often bottled as a single varietal wine, while in other regions it is blended with other grape varieties. In the others, large volumes of Pinot Noir are grown in the Yarra Valley, Marlborough, Central Otago, Willamette Valley, Casablanca and San Antonio sub-regions.

Widely proliferated, the grape is also cultivated in northern Italy, Chile, South Africa, and Australia, New Zealand and the USA.

Characteristics

Pinot Noir wines are often characterised by flavors of red fruit such as cherries, raspberries, and strawberries, along with earthy and spicy notes. In terms of body, Pinot Noir wines can range from light to medium-bodied, with a good balance between fruit and acidity.

Aroma-wise, Pinot Noir wines often exhibit scents of red fruit, along with floral and spicy notes, and a hint of earthiness.
