History

Château Cheval Blanc, located in the Saint-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux, France, has a history of viticulture dating back to at least the 15th century. The modern estate began to take shape in 1832 when Jean-Jacques Ducasse acquired land from Château Figeac. Over the following decades, his family expanded the vineyard and, in the mid-19th century, Jean Laussac-Fourcaud, Ducasse's son-in-law, replanted the estate with a distinctive blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, establishing the varietal composition that defines Cheval Blanc's wines today.

The estate gained international recognition in the late 19th century, earning medals at the Universal Exhibitions in London and Paris. In 1954, Château Cheval Blanc was classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé (A), the highest rank in the Saint-Émilion classification system. This status was maintained until 2022, when the estate chose to withdraw from the classification.

In 1998, the estate was acquired by Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frère, with Pierre Lurton appointed as managing director. Under their leadership, Cheval Blanc has continued to focus on producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the estate, which combines gravel and clay soils. The vineyard is planted primarily with Cabernet Franc and Merlot, contributing to the wine's distinctive character.
