Margaux is a prestigious appellation located in the Haut-Médoc district on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, in southwestern France. The wines are predominantly made from Cabernet Sauvignon, either as a single varietal or blended with other permitted grapes: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Carmenère, Petit Verdot, and Malbec.
The wines of Margaux are primarily classified under the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, created for the Exposition Universelle de Paris, which ranked Médoc estates into five tiers—Premier Cru, Deuxième Cru, Troisième Cru, Quatrième Cru, and Cinquième Cru. Margaux has more classified growths than any other Médoc appellation and includes one First Growth, Château Margaux, along with numerous Second through Fifth Growth estates collectively known as Grands Crus Classés.
In addition to the 1855 hierarchy, other quality estates in the appellation may be recognized under the modern Cru Bourgeois designation, which evaluates Médoc producers outside the original classification. Unlike Right Bank regions such as Saint-Émilion, Margaux does not operate a periodically revised internal ranking system; instead, its prestige structure remains rooted in the enduring 1855 classification and the historical reputation of its châteaux.
Margaux is located in southwestern France, within the Bordeaux wine region. More precisely, it lies in the Haut-Médoc district on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary, in the Gironde department. The appellation stretches across several communes, including Margaux-Cantenac, Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac, and Labarde, approximately 25 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of the city of Bordeaux.
