Château Mouton Rothschild was initially classified as a Second Growth estate in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Baron Philippe de Rothschild successfully lobbied for its promotion to First Growth (Premier Cru Classé) status in 1973, making it the only estate to have been elevated to this elite status.

This 1986 vintage is made from a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Label artwork designed by painter and leader of the School of Beauty, Bernard Séjourné.
