Petit Verdot is a red wine grape variety that is grown in Bordeaux, France and in other wine regions around the world. It is known for producing small, thick-skinned grapes that are high in tannins and colour, and is often used as a blending grape to add structure and depth to red wine blends.
The most notable Petit Verdot cultivation is in France, mostly in the Médoc where it is principally used in the classic Bordeaux blends where it is combined with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The grape is also found in smaller quantities in regions such as Lazio and Tuscany in Italy, and it appears in varietal wines of the New World, particularly from the wineries of Napa Valley in California and the Kingston Estate in South Australia, which has the most Petit Verdot under vine of anywhere in the world.
Petit Verdot grapes are known for their small, deeply coloured berries that produce intense and deeply coloured wine. These are noted for their firm tannic structure and high acidity.
The flavours and aromas of Petit Verdot wine can vary widely, but typically include notes of black cherry, blackberry, and plum, along with hints of spices such as black pepper and vanilla. The wine can also display aromas of violets, leather, and tobacco.
