Saint-Émilion is located in the Libournais district of Bordeaux's Right Bank. Merlot is the primary grape variety used in the wines blended with Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon. Carmenere, Petit Verdot and Malbec are also permitted but rarely used.
There is a fairly complicated classification system for the appellation which includes; Premier Grand Cru Classé A, Premier Grand Cru Classé B and Grand Cru Classé. Saint-Émilion Grand Cru may also be noted on labels but without the word "Classé", this means the wine is not part of this classification system. In recent years some top producers in the area have voluntarily withdrawn for the classification system.
France is widely recognized as one of the world's premier wine-producing countries, renowned for its diverse range of wine styles and regions, including Champagne, Bordeaux, and Burgundy.
