Puglia is a wine-producing region located in southern Italy, known for its production of full-bodied red wines made from the Primitivo grape and white wines made from the Verdeca grape. The region is characterised by its warm and sunny climate, as well as its rolling hills and diverse soil types, which provide ideal growing conditions for a range of grape varieties.
Puglia, in the south-eastern “heel” of Italy, has a long history of viticulture influenced by ancient Greek and Roman agricultural practices. The region's warm Mediterranean climate and diverse soils have long supported the cultivation of indigenous grape varieties such as Primitivo and Negroamaro, establishing a foundation for a robust wine tradition.
Over the centuries, Puglia’s winemaking evolved from producing local table wines to embracing techniques that highlight its unique terroir. The region is broadly divided into notable sub-regions, including Salento in the south, renowned for its structured red wines, and the Itria Valley, which has also contributed to the production of distinctive whites and rosés. These areas reflect a varied landscape where traditional methods and local grape genetics have been carefully nurtured.
In recent decades, a renewed focus on quality and sustainability has elevated Puglia’s reputation within Italy’s diverse wine landscape. Esteemed producers such as Feudi di San Marzano and Tormaresca have played pivotal roles in this transformation by integrating modern winemaking practices while preserving historical techniques. This balanced approach underscores Puglia’s ongoing evolution as a dynamic and significant wine-producing region.
