Malbec is a red wine grape variety that is originally from France, but is now widely grown in Argentina where it has become one of the country's signature varieties. It is used to produce a number of red wine styles, ranging from light and fruity to full-bodied and robust, and is prized for its rich tannins, bright acidity, and a range of fruit and spice flavours.
The Malbec grape is particularly well-known in the region of Cahors in south-western France where it has been grown for centuries. However, the vast majority of Malbec cultivation takes place in Argentina, where it has been widely planted in the Mendoza region in the foothills of the Andes Mountains.
Despite its origins in France, Malbec has become a globally recognized variety and has gained recognition in other wine regions such as the Central Valley in Chile and the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
Malbec is known for producing deeply coloured, full-bodied red wines with rich and intense flavours. The wines usually exhibit medium tannins and medium to low acidity.
On the nose these wines have a complex aroma profile featuring notes of dark fruit such as blackberry and black cherry, as well as hints of plum, spice and sometimes a touch of chocolate or vanilla. On the palate, Malbec wines are characterized by their firm tannins and juicy fruit flavours, with a balanced acidity that can lead to a smooth and long finish.
