Negroamaro is a red wine grape variety that is native to the Puglia region of southern Italy. It is often blended with other grape varieties such as Malvasia Nera and Primitivo to produce full-bodied, tannic wines with high alcohol content.
Negroamaro is mostly grown in the southern regions of Italy, particularly in Puglia. In the region, Negroamaro is often blended with other local grape varieties such as Primitivo, Malvasia Nera, Sangiovese or Montepulciano to create distinctive red wines with a unique flavour profile. The climate in Puglia is warm and dry, providing ideal growing conditions for the Negroamaro grape.
While Negroamaro is close to being exclusively cultivated in Italy, there are small amounts of the grape under vine in Australia and the United States too.
Negroamaro wines are known for their deep colour and robust flavour profile. The grape provides medium to high tannin levels which gives the wine structure and a slightly bitter taste.
The aroma of Negroamaro wines is often described as spicy, with hints of dark fruit and a slightly herbal note. When aged, the wine can develop secondary flavours such as leather and earth, as well as a pronounced acidity that provides balance and a fresh finish. The wine produced from Negroamaro grapes is typically full-bodied and has a good alcohol content.
