Trebbiano is a white wine grape variety that is widely grown in Italy and is one of the country's most planted grape varieties. It is also grown in France, where it is known as Ugni Blanc, and is used in the production of brandy and fortified wines.

Notable regions

The Trebbiano grape is widely planted in the regions of Italy, particularly in Tuscany, Abruzzo, and Umbria, where it is used to make Vernaccia di San Gimignano. In France, Trebbiano is grown in the Loire Valley and the Languedoc region where it is called Ugni Blanc. It is also commonly found in Spain and Portugal under the same name and used to make brandy and other fortified wines.

Outside of France and Italy, there are small plantings of the grape in Australia, Greece, Bulgaria, Croatia, Argentina and Uruguay.

Characteristics

Trebbiano grapes are noted for their high acidity, which can make the wines they produce crisp and refreshing. Trebbiano has a neutral flavour profile, making it a popular grape for blending with other varieties to add acidity to the wine.

The primary flavours exhibited tend to include fruit notes of lemon, green apple and peach, with herbal notes of basil and occasional minerality.
