The wines of Sauternes are produced from a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and occasionally a small amount of Muscadelle, left on the vines until affected by the noble fungus, Botrytis Cinerea, which dehydrates the grapes to raisins, leaving only the sweet sugary pulp with which to make the one of the worlds most sought after sweet wines.
Once belonging to the Carmelite monks in Langon, the renowned Château Rieussec is now owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), since they purchased the estate in 1984. Chateau Rieussec was ranked as a First Growth Premier Cru (1er-Cru) in Bordeaux' famed 1855 Classification of the Médoc.
