Leflaive is one of the most recognisable names in Burgundy, renowned for producing world-class white wines.
The Leflaive family has been established as winemakers in Puligny-Montrachet since 1717, but it was not until the 1990s when Anne-Claude Leflaive took charge, that her vision drove this domaine to such dizzying heights of wondrous white wine production. Today we are exploring the various “Leflaive” estates; and simultaneously some of the lesser-known fine Burgundian appellations.
Domaine Leflaive is the most famous estate in Puligny-Montrachet, Côte de Beaune. They are one of the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy, owing a tremendous debt to the founders grand-daughter Anne-Claude Leflaive, who was once named best white wine maker in the world by Decanter Magazine
A dominant Puligny-Montrachet based estate, they produce wines from their own, and leased, vineyards. The rarity and critical acclaim of Domaine Leflaive's Montrachet Grand Cru has soared it to the very top of top tier Burgundy in Wine-Searcher's list of the most expensive white wines from Burgundy. In 2004, Leflaive expanded into the historically under-valued Maconnais region with the purchase of a 9ha estate at Verzé.
Olivier Leflaive is the former co-manager of the family estate. Olivier decided to set up his own negociant house in 1985 and by 1994 withdrew from the family domaine to concentrate on this blossoming venture.
Unlike many negociants, Olivier's wines have been vinified, matured and bottled by Olivier Leflaive Frères. Olivier's wines span over 60 appellations and he even has a few of his own vineyards. Today, his wines are regarded as one Burgundy's insider secrets.
In partnership with independent vinegrowers, chosen for their shared values in meticulous and natural grape cultivation, Leflaive introduced "Leflaive & Associes".
Produced by the same team in separate cellars, the wines released under this stable are made utilising the same winemaking methods that have brought Domaine Leflaive the respect and reputation that they have been cherished for over the years.
