Château Lynch-Bages is a wine estate located in the Pauillac appellation of the Médoc region in Bordeaux, France. The Lynch-Bages vineyard, overlooking the Gironde estuary, was formerly owned by the illustrious Lynch family of Irish descent. It was acquired by the Cazes family in 1939.
Château Lynch-Bages, situated in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux has a history dating back to the 18th century. In 1749, Thomas Lynch, the son of Irish émigré John Lynch, inherited the estate through his wife Elizabeth Drouillard. Under Thomas's stewardship, the property known as "Cru de Lynch" gained recognition for producing quality wines. The estate remained in the Lynch family until 1824 after which it changed hands several times. In 1855 it was classified as a Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru) in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification.
In 1934, Jean-Charles Cazes rented Château Lynch-Bages and purchased it in 1938. He revitalised the estate, focusing on producing wines that reflected the unique terroir of Pauillac. His son André Cazes continued this legacy, promoting Bordeaux wines internationally and serving as mayor of Pauillac for over 40 years.
Jean-Michel Cazes, Jean-Charles's grandson, took over in the 1970s and further modernised the estate, expanding its global presence. He introduced innovative marketing strategies and emphasised quality, solidifying Lynch-Bages's reputation. Today the estate remains under the stewardship of the Cazes family, with Jean-Charles Cazes, the fourth generation, leading the winery. Château Lynch-Bages continues to produce wines that embody the character and tradition of Pauillac.
