History

Founded in 1865 by Clemente Santi at the Il Greppo estate in Montalcino, the winery began experimenting with 100 % Sangiovese aged in barrels to produce a wine capable of long-term ageing. His grandson, Ferruccio Biondi‑Santi, released the first modern Brunello di Montalcino in 1888, establishing both the style and the grape clone BBS11.

Through the 20th century, the estate remained under family stewardship and Ferruccio’s son, Tancredi, and later, Franco Biondi‑Santi, continued focusing on traditional methods such as Slavonian casks, native yeasts, long ageing and cellar discipline. Flagship Riserva vintages, including 1891, 1955 and 2012, entered legend for their longevity and consistency .

In 2020, ownership transitioned outside the family when the French luxury group EPI acquired a majority stake. Despite this change, Tenuta Greppo continues traditional Brunello production (both Annata and limited Riserva), maintaining its heritage of extended ageing, estate-grown BBS11 grapes, and cellar stewardship at the original Il Greppo estate.
