Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a world-renowned winery located in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy. Founded in 1981, the winery is known for producing exceptional Super Tuscan wines, particularly its flagship wine, Ornellaia. The winery's vineyards are located on the coastal hills of the Tyrrhenian Sea and are managed using sustainable and biodynamic farming practices.
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany. Drawing inspiration from Bordeaux, Antinori planted international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc on the estate's coastal vineyards. The first vintage of its flagship wine, Ornellaia, was released in 1985, marking the estate's entry into the emerging category of "Super Tuscan" wines.
In the late 1990s, the estate underwent several ownership changes. Robert Mondavi Winery acquired a minority stake in 1999 and became the full owner by 2002. Subsequently, in 2005, the Frescobaldi family, a prominent name in Italian winemaking, took full ownership of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. Under their stewardship, the estate continued to focus on producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of Bolgheri.
Today, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is recognised for its commitment to excellence and innovation in winemaking. The estate produces several notable wines, including Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia, and Masseto, a Merlot-based wine that has gained its own acclaim. With a focus on sustainable practices and meticulous vineyard management, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia continues to contribute to the prestige of Italian wines on the global stage.
