Montevertine is a family-owned winery in Tuscany’s Chianti region, established in 1967. Renowned for its Sangiovese-based wines, including the flagship Le Pergole Torte, the estate emphasises low yields, biodynamic farming, and traditional winemaking to express terroir purity.
Montevertine is situated near Radda in the Chianti hills on a site inhabited since the 11th century. In 1967, steel‑industry executive Sergio Manetti acquired the hilltop property as a vacation home and planted two hectares of vineyards, releasing the first 1971 vintage under his own label. His early success led him to dedicate himself fully to winemaking.
From the outset, Manetti emphasised pure Sangiovese, blending it with small amounts of local varieties like Colorino and Canaiolo, and resisted including white grapes such as Trebbiano, even when required by DOCG rules. In 1981, Montevertine withdrew from the Chianti Classico consortium over this issue and began labelling its wines as Toscana IGT, a move that set it apart from both traditional and Super‑Tuscan producers.
After Sergio’s death in 2000, his son Martino Manetti, alongside long-time oenologist Paolo Salvi (a protégé of Giulio Gambelli), took over management. Today Montevertine covers ca. 18 ha (90% Sangiovese), practices organic viticulture, and continues producing its estate wines such as the renowned Le Pergole Torte using traditional vinification and ageing methods that honour its founder’s philosophy.
