Since the 1955 Saint-Émilion classification, Château Cheval Blanc has held the highest rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé "A". In 2021 the Château voluntary withdrew from the official Saint-Émilion classification system due to concerns about the evolving criteria.
Château Cheval Blanc is made from a fairly even blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc occasionally with a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon: aged for 16-18 months in new French oak.

Château Cheval Blanc, is widely considered by many experts, to be the leading estate in Saint-Émilion. It is located in the north-west of the Saint-Émilion appellation, bordering Pomerol in the Bordeaux region of France. Cheval Blanc produces the most famous Cabernet Franc-based wine in the world.
