Carménère is a red wine grape variety that was originally grown in Bordeaux, France. It was widely believed to have been extinct until it was rediscovered in Chile in the 1990s.
Carménère is primarily grown in Chile, where it was once thought to be Merlot. It is now widely recognised as a distinct variety and is considered one of Chile's signature wine grapes. Carménère is grown in several wine regions throughout the country, including the Rapel Valley, the Colchagua Valley, and the Maipo Valley.
Small amounts are also cultivated in other wine regions such as France and Italy, where it is used to produce full-bodied and spicy red wines.
Carménère is known for its full-bodied and spicy profile with high tannin and moderate acidity. The grape contains higher levels of aroma compounds called pyrazines which give wines subtle flavours of bell pepper, green peppercorn, eucalyptus, paprika and sometimes cocoa powder.
The grape also produces wines with rich fruit flavours of black cherry, blackberry, and plum.
