Roussillon is a sub-region within the broader Languedoc-Roussillon wine area in southern France. Although the two are often grouped administratively and commercially, they differ in geography, culture, and wine production. Languedoc is largely low-lying and produces a wide range of wines, including many large-volume blends. Roussillon lies closer to the Pyrenees near the Spanish border, has strong Catalan cultural influences, and is known for smaller production and for both dry wines and fortified Vins Doux Naturels.
