Carignan is a red grape variety that despite being of Spanish origin that is more commonly found in French wine. It widely planted throughout the western Mediterranean and around the globe.
Carignan is widely grown in several wine regions around the world, particularly in France and Spain. In France it is primarily grown in the Languedoc-Roussillon region where it is used to produce full-bodied, tannic red wines. Whereas in in Spain, Carignan is grown in regions such as Catalonia and the Balearic Islands where it is used to produce lighter, fruit-forward red wines.
Carignan is also grown in the New World in regions such as California, Chile, and South Africa.
Carignan wines are known for their medium-bodied, tannic profile, with medium to high acidity and alcohol level.
The grape produces wines with red fruit flavours such as plum and black cherry, with berry notes of cranberry and raspberry. Wine can also exhibit flavours of liquorice or cured meats, with spicy and earthy notes.
