A special edition Reserve Port from the house of Fonseca, produced to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Fonseca and the Battle of Waterloo (1815-2015).
Reserve Port (originally called Vintage Character Port until 2002) is made from a blend of vintages that follow much the same maturation processes for either Ruby or Tawny Ports, but with more freedom for the winemakers to experiment and blend different wines and from different years to achieve their desired character and flavour profiles.
Fonseca Port is a historic wine producer located in the Douro Valley of Portugal. Established in 1822, they are known for producing premium vintage and tawny ports. They are one of the few remaining houses that still use foot treading in their winemaking process.
Portugal is a well-known wine producing country, with a long history of winemaking dating back to 2000 BC when vines were cultivated by the Tartessians.
DOC Portugal (Denominação de Origem Controlada) is a wine classification system used in Portugal to designate wines of controlled origin, similar to France's AOC or Italy’s DOC. This system ensures that wines produced within a specific region adhere to strict regulations regarding grape varieties, winemaking methods, and quality standards. Portugal's wine regions, such as Douro, Alentejo, Vinho Verde, and Madeira, are recognized for their unique terroirs, which contribute to the diverse and high-quality wines the country is known for. DOC wines are typically made from indigenous Portuguese grape varieties, such as Touriga Nacional, Tempranillo, and Alvarinho, which express the distinct characteristics of each region. The DOC classification guarantees the authenticity and origin of the wines, providing consumers with a mark of quality and consistency. This designation is crucial in preserving the rich winemaking heritage of Portugal while helping modernize the industry and increase the global recognition of Portuguese wines.
