Portugal is renowned for its diverse wine regions. The country’s wine production is divided into Vinho Regional (regional wines) and Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) wines, the latter representing the highest quality. Portugal is famous for fortified wines, especially Port from the Douro Valley and Madeira from the Madeira Islands, as well as a wide range of table wines from regions such as Dão, Alentejo, Bairrada, and Vinho Verde.

The country cultivates both native grape varieties, like Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Alvarinho, and international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Portugal’s varied landscapes—from cool, rainy coastal zones to hot, dry inland valleys—create a rich tapestry of wine styles, ranging from crisp whites to robust reds and sweet fortified wines, making it one of Europe’s most unique and versatile wine-producing countries.
