Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia is a legendary winery located in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy. Established in 1968, the winery is credited with creating the Super Tuscan category of wines. The winery produces a range of high-quality wines, including its flagship wine, Sassicaia, which is made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes.
Tenuta San Guido, located in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy, was established in the mid-20th century by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. The estate was founded with the intention of exploring the potential of Bordeaux varietals in a region traditionally known for Sangiovese-based wines, and it has since maintained a focus on expressing the distinct characteristics of its local terroir.
In the 1960s, Tenuta San Guido introduced Sassicaia, a wine produced primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This venture marked a departure from conventional Tuscan winemaking practices, as the estate applied rigorous vineyard management and a deliberate vinification process to craft a wine that would eventually influence the evolution of the region's wine style.
Today, Tenuta San Guido continues to produce Sassicaia alongside a range of other wines, adhering to a balanced approach that integrates traditional practices with modern techniques. The estate remains committed to quality and precision, and its work has contributed to the recognition of innovative winemaking in Tuscany while preserving a clear sense of regional identity.
