The estate has a long and illustrious history dating back to the 17th century and has been owned by the Rothschild family since 1868. Lafite-Rothschild is known for producing some of the most prestigious and most sought-after wines in the world, with a focus on elegance, finesse, and longevity. The vineyard covers over 100 hectares and is planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
Château Lafite-Rothschild, located in Pauillac in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, has a documented history of viticulture dating back to at least the 17th century. By the early 18th century, under the stewardship of the Ségur family, Lafite had gained recognition for the quality of its wines, becoming known as one of the premier estates of Bordeaux.
In 1868, the château was purchased by Baron James de Rothschild, marking the beginning of its association with the Rothschild family, who have overseen the estate ever since. Despite challenges including phylloxera, economic downturns, and wartime disruptions, the family maintained the estate’s reputation and continued investments in the vineyards and winemaking facilities.
Today, Château Lafite-Rothschild is recognised as one of the five First Growths classified in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate continues to focus on producing wines that reflect its terroir, with a strong emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon and traditional methods, while incorporating modern advancements to preserve quality and consistency.
